What fabrics are offered?

We are a dealer for Charlotte Fabrics of Minnesota, who offer a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty and maintain over 9,000 patterns in stock.  We have over 100 sample books here in the shop, giving you neatly organized options without feeling overwhelmed.  Our sample book collection is updated regularly with new styles.  We prefer to do business with this supplier as they have top quality materials, excellent customer service, and they support us with the detailed technical information we need to help you in choosing products to match your intended uses, cleaning preferences, traffic, and more.

All of Charlotte’s fabrics are available with either Lifeguard, GreenGuard, or Crypton fabric protection.  If stain protection is not already part of your chosen fabric’s manufacturing process, Lifeguard can be custom applied at the factory as a per yard charge.  This non-toxic, pet-safe, and odor-free finish permanently repels liquid, stains, soil, microbes and odor.  It also enhances abrasion performance of your fabric.  As a shop committed to strict chemical sensitivity practices, this is a winner.

Charlotte also offers Crypton Protected leathers, high quality breathable synthetic leathers, sling fabric, AllSport vinyl, and much more.      Note – computer monitors and phone screens do not accurately reproduce the fabrics’ true colors, thickness, textures, and softness.

How about luxurious leather?

Leather turns your old furniture into highly desirable heirlooms of breathtaking beauty.  Just look through our gallery!   Our leather is typically purchased as whole hides through Carroll Leather of South Carolina.  They’ve provided great customer service and outstanding products for over 40 years.  They offer an extensive variety of high quality leather lines, and we have hundreds of samples for you to examine and feel.  Selecting your leather is such a marvelous sensory experience, we do not order your hides before you see, touch, and smell your choices in person.  It’s not unusual for customers to come into our shop to choose fabric, and change to leather when they admire a beautiful piece we are working on.  Take a look through the website and tell us what interests you.    Hair-on hides and Gobi longhair wool pillows are also available ( including tiger and zebra dyed prints).   Note – computer monitors and phone screens do not accurately portray the leathers’ true colors, thickness, textures, suppleness, nor aromas.

How about my boat, car, and outdoor products?

We definitely have you covered.   We have sample books in house for Sunbrella, Tempotest, Naugahyde, Morbern, Seaquest, Endurasoft, Spradling, and many other high quality marine vinyls and canvas products.  Automotive headliner, upholstery, and flooring samples are also on hand.  Vinyl window samples and specialty RV products are available.  We’re very diligent in tracking down the right products for you.

Can you actually get genuine wool clan tartans woven in Scotland?

AYE! We have four chieftain-size volumes of authorized sample books.  We create bespoke, unforgettable gifts and heirloom furniture.  Take a look through our gallery for examples of unique tartan furniture and customized tote bags we’ve created.  Don’t have a clan?  There are plenty of non-clan patterns to feel your own Scottish pride!

Great! How do I get started?

Let’s talk about your project! Give us a call at the shop 207-293-4447, or email through the “contact us” link.   When sending your photos, email is best (Roger’s cell if you are unable to email).  The shop number is a landline (so we won’t see your texts or pictures).   It is not necessary to have materials selected before you call us.  We will ask you about your project budget at this time to assure our expectations are in line with each other.  It is sometimes difficult to give you an accurate project estimate sight unseen, but if you’re wanting a $5000 job for $200, it’s best to discuss this before you load up and travel, eh?

Next – We’ll meet with you for your project planning appointment.  If we are repairing / doing a makeover, it’s important to bring your piece along for inspection and better estimating.  If this is not possible, we’ll need very good photos with the understanding that we cannot detect hidden damage and internal problems until we are disassembling your piece.  Please advise when we schedule your appointment if you would like to look through material sample books so we allow enough time in our schedule.   We will write up your work order and ask for a 50% deposit.  This secures your job a place in our queue and we order your materials immediately.  Some materials are on backorder for many months or are being discontinued, hence our practice to order what you need immediately from American suppliers.

We do not “book you”, “hold places in line”, nor buy materials without your signed work order and deposit.  We typically have you take your piece back home with you for storage until your service dropoff date on the calendar is near. Exceptions for storage may be made, for example if you are a seasonal resident, you’re moving, or for long-distance overwinter marine work.

In cases of heavy / wet marine reupholstery and outdoor seats, please have your piece to us in advance of your scheduled start date so we can dry out the foam prior to reupholstering.  Upon your discovery of any open seams and exposed foam, please cover these areas with a good quality vinyl repair tape.  Exposure will erode your foam, which must then be rebuilt or replaced.   It is ideal to schedule your known marine work prior to putting your boat into winter storage.  We understand mice surprise you with damage in the spring.  Just give us a call.

Please understand there are few of us craftsmen left in this industry, which means there is great demand for our skills and thus, typically a wait in the work queue.   Custom fabrications for special occasions and heirloom restorations are a delight, and are best reserved several months ahead of your ideal completion date.  We politely decline jobs if you were to ask us to use substandard materials, slap them together haphazardly, and pull all-nighters so you can have it done by tomorrow.  We take immense pride in our workmanship and giving you our very best.   Even with a small repair, please call us right away to schedule – don’t put it off until your company is on the way and it’s become an embarrassing emergency.  We’ll do our best to help you whenever possible.

Thank you for choosing our Maine small business to take care of you
